Frequently Asked Questions
We offer:
- Cleaning and preparation of the inscription area
- Filling any carved letters or numbers with specialist stone filler (if required)
- Repainting letters in durable, weather-resistant paint or applying gold leaf gilding
- Sealing the inscription to protect from future weathering and biological growth
- Repainting uses a high-quality, UV-resistant stone paint in a colour of your choice (typically black, white or grey).
- Gilding applies real gold leaf to the letter faces, providing a traditional, long-lasting finish. Gilded inscriptions can remain vibrant for decades if maintained.
The client chooses which finish is preferred, based on aesthetics and budget.
On average, simple repainting jobs require 1–2 hours on site. Gilding takes an additional hour (for adhesive and leaf application) plus a short drying time. We’ll confirm the exact duration when providing your quote.
Yes. Our craftsmen take care to replicate the original letter style and size as closely as possible. If the original has eroded beyond recognition, we’ll discuss the most sympathetic font to use.
- Painted letters usually need refreshing every 3–5 years, depending on weather exposure.
- Gold leaf gilding can endure for 10 years or more before requiring a light refresh.
We offer maintenance plans for periodic touch-ups so the wording stays clear and legible.
For optimal results, letters should be at least 1 cm in height (about 0.4 in). Smaller lettering can be repainted but may not show gilding detail effectively. If your inscription has tiny characters, we’ll recommend the best approach in your quote.
Costs depend on the length of the inscription, condition of the stone, any prep work required and whether you choose paint or gold leaf. Headstone Gilding & Relettering typically starts at £149 + VAT. We’ll provide an exact figure once we see your inscription.
